We're going to have to wait until Sunday to see who wins Super Bowl XLV but in the meantime, a champion of a vastly different contest was crowned Friday in Philadelphia.
Jon "Super" Squibb, a six-foot-four accountant from New Jersey, downed 255 chicken wings, beating 25 other contestants to win his third Wing Bowl 2011 title. His approximate intake: A staggering 40,000 calories and 2,550 grams of fat. Squibb's closest competitor was "El Wingador" who couldn't put any more away after Wing #254.
“I feel on top of the world,” Squibb told CBS Sports Radio afterwards. “This was awesome. I was competing against my hero and it’s why I worked at this a little harder, and went at it a little stronger." He's had his fill of wings for a while, though; during the Super Bowl, Squibb said, "I'll probably have a pizza."
The contest wasn't just about bragging rights; for his efforts, Squibb won $20,000 and a 2011 Dodge Ram truck.
Some of the 20,000 Philly fans at Wells Fargo Centre were already tailgating at 4 a.m. as they waited in line to get good seats for this 19th annual event, which is organized by 610 WIP-AM and raises money for charity.
If you're interested replicating Squibb's feat, here's a "recipe" from Babble.com for Wing Bowl Winner Wings:
255 chicken wings
5 pounds of butter
5 10-oz bottles of hot sauce
1 cup paprika
1 cup cayenne pepper
1 cup garlic powder
10 quarts oil for frying
In an industrial-sized fryer, heat oil, salt and pepper chicken wings, then immerse in the hot oil until cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.
Meanwhile, stir together the remaining ingredients in a 22-gallon stockpot, pour cooked wings into a discarded refrigerator box lined with aluminum foil. Toss wings and sauce together using two large Scandinavian weightlifters and a John Deere tractor.
