END OF AN ERA: There reportedly is a very sad feeling among the production staff of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” now that Chris Meloni is leaving the popular series after a 12-season run.
While the actor’s departure is mainly due to an inability to secure what I’ve been told was a pretty hefty salary increase from the show’s producers, it also reflects Meloni’s feeling that it’s time for him to move on and seek other professional challenges.
Meloni’s co-star, Mariska Hargitay, did ink a renewal, but it’s reported her role likely will be phased out, with the actress’ appearances in the latter episodes of the upcoming season being greatly reduced.
“Like so many shows, it’s time for a big retooling,” said an “SVU” staffer Tuesday.
FILM FORWARD: Though there’s no title yet for the Kathryn Bigelow movie about Osama bin Laden, the Oscar-winning director of “The Hurt Locker” has inked a deal with Columbia Pictures to distribute the film focusing heavily on Navy SEAL Team 6. It was written by her partner, Mark Boal, who won his screenwriter Academy Award for “The Hurt Locker.” The movie is set to start shooting this fall, with a 2012 release planned.
ROMANTIC RUMBLES: There does seem to be increasing evidence that Leonardo DiCaprio has rebounded nicely from his relationship with Bar Refaeli — by reconnecting with “Gossip Girl” Blake Lively. . . . And, it looks like Olivia Wilde and Justin Timberlake really are just “good [platonic] friends” as they have been claiming. The newly divorced actress and Bradley Cooper are now said to be a new item.
SEEING DOUBLE? As Julianne Moore portrays Sarah Palin in the upcoming HBO film “Game Change,” we learn Palin herself has authorized “The Undefeated,” a documentary about her 2008 run for vice president. Created by conservative filmmaker Stephen K. Bannon — who made “Generation Zero” about the Tea Party movement, and “In the Face of Evil” about President Ronald Reagan — “Undefeated” will be released first in late June in Iowa and then in other early primary states, before an eventual rollout nationwide.
COVER-UP DENIED: As the stories about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s infidelities continue to swirl, the former California governor is fighting back — at least against stories that his California Highway Patrol bodyguards knowingly covered up his dalliances. The aging action star has hired major Hollywood legal eagle Marty Singer to bash the CHP tales, calling them completely fabricated.
Meanwhile, a couple of longtime CHP officers who protected Schwarzenegger told TMZ they never aided his marital misdeeds. “I can say without a shadow of a doubt as a supervisor of his protective detail that at no time did I see Gov. Schwarzenegger say or do anything that could be deemed inappropriate,” said retired CHP sergeant Mark Hammond.
