Kath and Kim movie, The BBC has acquired the hugely-successful Da Kath & Kim Code for BBC TWO. The television movie special was the highest-rating film on Australian television when it aired on ABC last year, with 2.2 million average audience (peaking at 2.45 million) - and an extraordinary audience share of 35% (all people).
The telemovie deal is signed just as the our favourite antipodean suburbanites are expected in the UK for a promotional tour next week to promote the second series of the show, which is scheduled for broadcast on BBC TWO on Monday 7 August. Australia's biggest-ever comedy export, Kath & Kim focuses on the daily trials and tribulations of Kath Day-Knight (Jane Turner) and her daughter Kim (Gina Riley), who spends most of her time estranged from her hapless husband, Brett (Peter Rowsthorn).
The sharply-crafted film script includes Da Vinci Code gags; sees Brett promoted at the Fountain Gates' computer store; Kath and Kel (Glenn Robbins) taking dance lessons and Sharon (Magda Szubanski), falling in love (on the internet, naturally).
Filmed in documentary style, the film features the sharp and extremely well-observed comedy we've come to expect from the series and includes all the regular gags - the mispronounced words, and catchphrases - plus guest appearances including Australian megastar Barry Humphries and Canadian crooner Michael Buble.
Kath commented: "We are extounded at the response to our telly movie.
"We had people over for drinks and nibbles and then watched it on the plasma in the good room and we thoroughly enjoyed it... but then again we might be a bit biased."
Kim said today: "I always love going to the UK because let's face it most of you Brits feel insuperior to us Aussies and with good reason.
"I also can't wait to get back to the UK as I have put a pair of Nutella Versace low rise bumsters on lay by at H&M last time I was there, so I can pick those up."
The film deal was agreed with Co-Executive Producer Rick McKenna of Riley Turner Productions, by Sue Deeks, Head of Series, BBC Programme Acquisition.
Sue Deeks said: "Da Kath & Kim Code is another sharp, well-observed, laugh-out-loud funny outing, only it's three times as long - what a treat for BBC TWO viewers!"
