SF usurped as top travel spot


SF usurped as top travel spot, Charleston named top US tourist destination. Charleston has been honored as the top American travel destination by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler Magazine.

For the past three years, Charleston ranked No. 2.

The award was presented Monday evening at the magazine's Reader's Choice Awards in New York with Charleston native and comedian Stephen Colbert awarding the honor to local tourism officials.


Colbert said Charleston is the most beautiful city he has ever seen and joked that, as a child, he picked up pocket change pointing out the house in Charleston where Rhett Butler grew up.

Charleston made its debut on the magazine's Readers' Choice Awards list of "Top 10 U.S. Destinations" in 1993, coming in at No. 6. The city went on to earn a top 10 ranking for 16 more years, holding its own alongside major metropolitan areas such as San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Boston.

San Francisco was second on this year's list followed by Santa Fe, N.M., Chicago and Honolulu. New York was next followed by Savannah, Ga., Carmel, Cal., Seattle and Boston. conde nast us travel destination, San Francisco, California, Charleston, South Carolina, Stephen Colbert,

Also honored at the gala event was Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which was ranked No. 3 on the list of Top U.S. Islands and No. 3 on the list of Top Mainland U.S. Resorts.
