Elvis Birthday Celebrations
Elvis' birthday celebration at Little Graceland
He sold over one billion records and made countless hearts throb. He’s is the King of Rock; he is Elvis Presley and Saturday, Jan. 7 Los Fresnos will celebrate this icon with an annual music festival. The festival celebrates Elvis Presley’s birthday and features Elvis impersonators performing at Little Graceland on Highway 100 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Little Graceland is also the home of Simon Vega, who hosts two Elvis festivals each year. Vega, who knew Elvis when they both served in the U.S. Army in Germany.
“I started this as a tribute to Elvis,” said Simon Vega, owner of Little Graceland, a small museum dedicated to the musician.
“Elvis and I were real good friends,” said Vega. “We served together in the Army. We took basic training at Fort Hood in 1958, and then they shipped us overseas. We were stationed together in Germany for almost 21 months. He was a very humble young boy. We were 21 then.”
When Presley died, Vega began collecting anything with a connection to his old Army friend. He transformed his Los Fresnos home into Little Graceland, where he displays his countless pieces of memorabilia in glass cases and on the walls of the museum.
As in past years, Elvis impersonators will perform throughout the day. The lineup includes Chad Roy of Harlingen, Joe Marquez of Brownsville, Omar Aguilera of Houston, Asa Landry of Copeland and Jorge Corona of Houston, among others. A total of 10 Elvis impersonators are scheduled for the festival.
