Police believe they found the child's body at the bottom of a very deep hole in his neighbor's back yard.
Samuel Jones, 4, was reported missing by his family Saturday evening.
Police believed he might have been abducted by a stranger.
An Amber Alert was issued and rescue crews searched all night, but Sunday morning it appears he may have not made it far from his home.
The hole was found by an officer around 7 a.m. Sunday and is located east of Jones’ home in his neighbor's back yard.
Police say it's about 14-inches wide and at least 30-feet deep.
Officials on scene said it appears the hole may have been a water well at one point.
Investigators lowered a camera down into the hole and that's how they were able to confirm there is a small child inside.
”we initially began with rescue procedures and unfortunately, it was discovered that the conditions inside the hole were not survivable, the amount of oxygen that was there, that type of thing,” Police Chief Daniel Ffierro said.
Police say the excavating process is very delicate, that there are at least two natural gas lines and a utility line in the area, so depending on conditions it could take hours or possibly until Monday morning to recover the body.
The investigation is being treated as a homicide until police can determine the cause of death.
Volunteers have planned a candle light vigil near the scene on Taylor Circle at 6:30 p.m.
