Marina Keegan Dies - A Yale graduate with a promising writing career has been killed in a car crash just weeks before she was due to start her dream job and move to New York City.
Marina Keegan, 22, died on Saturday afternoon in Cape Cod. Her parents spoke of their devastation at the loss of their 'amazing, wise' daughter who had graduated five days ago.
She had been due to start at The New Yorker magazine next month as an editorial assistant and move into a Brooklyn apartment with friends.
Miss Keegan was a passenger when her boyfriend Michael Gocksch lost control of his Lexus over the holiday weekend near Dennis, Massachusetts.
The car hit the guardrail before crossing to the opposite side of the road and rolling over twice. Miss Keegan died at the scene.
Mr Gocksch, a Yale graduate from Long Island, was in hospital but was expected to survive.
Both victims were wearing seat belts and speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.
Her mother Tracy Keegan told the New York Daily News: 'She was just one of those amazing, wise souls that was given to us as a gift.
'She had an unbelievable, beyond-her-years way of looking at the world, and her passion was to try and use her words to explore the human condition. This is one of her legacies that she will leave behind.'
Miss Keegan, from Wayland, studied English at Yale from 2008.She graduated magna cum laude five days before her death.
The graduate was president of the Yale College Democrats and led Occupy Wall Street protests at the college.
She had also written a musical called Independents which is due to run at New York International Fringe Festival in August.
Her mother added that she had loved New York and couldn't wait to start her new life in the city.
The student newspaper, the Yale Daily News, published one of the last articles that Miss Keegan had written before graduation, called The Opposite of Loneliness.
In the article where she reflects on her hopes for life after college, she poignantly wrote: 'We’re so young. We’re so young. We’re twenty-two years old. We have so much time.'
Miss Keegan is survived by her parents, Tracy and Kevin, and brothers Trevor and Pierce.
