$70 million per seat: NASA Pays Russia Huge Sum To Send Astronauts To ISS - $70 million per seat is new Russian Soyuz price being charged to NASA. And U.S. officials are furious. NASA tells news this week that the Russian Space Agency formerly charged about $63 million per seat. But now to travel to the International Space Station on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft between the years 2016 and 2017 is becoming more expensive. Russia is increasing the price to a staggering $70.6 million per seat.
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden denounced the price charge. But he also blamed Congress. Bolden told Congress this week that, if they had approved more sought funding for commercial travel, the contract with the Russian Space Agency would not have been needed. Instead, the US will have to pay Russia $424 million to travel over sixteen months ending in 2017.
