The 27-year-old Los Angeles singer was giving a spirited performance of his song Adorn before a live audience in Las Vegas for the music awards.
Miguel was wearing a white suit with black lapels and had executed a few spins and the splits before attempting his ill-fated stage leap.
The Sure Thing singer tried to jump over a group of people swaying to his song in a pit with their hands up in the air, but failed to clear the crowd and inadvertently inflicted a flying leg kick on a fan.
His left thigh struck a dark-haired young woman and violently cracked her against the stage as he landed on her head and settled on his rear.
The woman disappeared from view after receiving the brunt of the flying leg blow as Miguel remained seated on the stage and put his arm around a blonde woman as he continued singing.
Miguel later posted a message on Twitter about the incident.
It read: 'got caught up in moment, thank goodness Khyati is okay'
Miguel was born and raised in the San Pedro area of Los Angeles and released his debut album All I Want Is You in November 2010.
