SAN ANTONIO -- Tx-DOT and the City of San Antonio are doing everything they can to keep our streets safe.
Friday morning all the major roadways were shut down and many local streets were impassable.
At I-10 and Cherry Ridge the road was closed until about 8 a.m. Friday morning. An officer was there diverting traffic to some neighborhood streets.
Like many roadways the area was covered with some thin ice. Semi-trucks stalled and cars and trucks were slipping and sliding. Many drivers just pulled over and waited for the conditions to improve.
Tx-DOT has been out and about laying chat rock and spraying liquid de-icing agent on the roadways.
Many drivers found themselves car-less because of road conditons.
A brother and sister who drove in from Dallas on a dangerous I-35. They say they had to get here for their mom's birthday. They say they saw many cars pulling off onto the side of the road, unable to go further.
Tow truck drivers have been working overtime pulling cars from the streets to the city impound lot. The drop-off process has been non-stop since Thursday night. The average tow truck driver expected to pull in at least 20 vehicles just Friday morning.
VIA buses are now back in service. The city had suspended all bus services until 11 a.m. Friday. Now that the highways and access roads are reopening, buses have left the yard and are on their regular routes. But VIA officials are asking riders to be patient as there still may be some detours. Express service will run on local streets until highways are all reopened.
TxDOT continues to treat roadways. They told reporters they were expecting dry snow, not freezing rain and were caught off guard. Workers scrambled to treat the roadways, but it was too much to handle. So, at 11 p.m. Thursday the decision was made to close all major highways.
The National Weather Service says most of the counties in our area had ice covered roads Friday morning and a light snow on top of that. That is a dangerous mix and it's important to be careful throughout the day.
