Frank Buckles, Last World War I Doughboy, Is Dead at 110

Frank Buckles, who drove an Army ambulance in France in 1918 and came to symbolize a generation of embattled young Americans as the last of the World War I doughboys, died Sunday at his home in Charles Town, W. Va. He was 110.
His death was announced by a family spokesman, David DeJonge, The Associated Press said.
He was only a corporal and he never got closer than 30 or so miles from the Western Front trenches, but Mr. Buckles became something of a national treasure as the last living link to the two million men who served inthe American Expeditionary Forces in France in “the war to end all wars.”
Frail, stooped and hard of hearing, but sharp of mind, Mr. Buckles was named grand marshal of the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington in 2007. He was a guest at Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day 2007 for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. He was honored by Defense Secretary Robert Gates at the Pentagon and met with President George W. Bush at the White House in March 2008.

Does collective bargaining make for better or worse test scores?

With Republican-controlled legislatures and state houses from Wisconsin to Oklahoma attempting to strip state workers of collective bargaining rights, figures on the combined SAT and ACT college entrance test scores in states without them are proving fodder for the ongoing debate.

As republished in The Economist, a chart purporting to show that combined SAT and ACT scores in the five U.S. states without collective bargaining rights are among the worst in the country quickly became a viral hit on Twitter and Facebook. Indeed, this reporter first saw the information via Andrew Sullivan's blog, which linked to The Economist, a highly trusted source of information. The specific data showed the following combined SAT/ACT rankings for the states without collective bargaining rights for teachers:

* South Carolina -- 50th
* North Carolina -- 49th
* Georgia -- 48th
* Texas -- 47th
* Virginia -- 44th

Wisconsin ranked second, according to the source cited by the Economist.

Though the Economist did note that drawing the conclusion that students did better as a direct result of the inclusion of collective bargaining rights for their teachers was tenuous, it suggested that arguing that doing away with those rights would lift student performance was rather absurd.

"... this doesn't show that collective bargaining makes school systems better. But it makes it pretty hard to argue the converse," the Economist wrote.

Those reports are wrong. The reports said he tweeted his thoughts about the toxic, controversial fight between Sheen and the show's producer, Chuck Lorre.

Cryer's publicist told NBCLA that those reports are "fake." And she says Jon Cryer doesn't even have a Twitter account.

The fake tweet read, "It's too sad! Sorry guys, that you must hear so bad news! I'm also shocked!"

Twitter has since shut down the @JonNivenCryer account.

For Black History Month, we look at the inner life of the black geek
There was a time when being a geek -- or a nerd, for that matter -- was just about the worst thing you could be. But with the emergence of a geek culture unashamed to wave its freak flag high, we now find ourselves living in a geek-friendly society. There is no longer shame in being an adult who reads comic books, watches animation, plays video games or enjoys any of the other things that often are attributed to geeks, nerds and other various socially challenged misfits.
Despite an increasingly visible audience that drives much of contemporary pop culture, being a geek or a nerd is still traditionally thought of as a domain exclusive to white people (and select Asian cultures). There is, however, an entire culture of black geeks that has struggled to make itself more visible in the larger world of geekdom. And while the term black geek may conjure up images of Jaleel White as Urkel on "Family Matters" or Alfonso Ribeiro on "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," the contemporary black geek is actually more like rapper Mos Def or actor Donald Glover on "Community."
The 21st-century black geek is an offshoot of the middle-class buppie and the old-school b-boy culture, both of which were immersed in a deep-rooted Afrocentric understanding of the world at large. Black geeks grew up reading books like "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" and listening to Parliament-Funkadelic, while watching reruns of "The Partridge Family" and flipping through the pages of Spider-Man comic books. Black pop culture historians like Fab 5 Freddy, the original host of "Yo! MTV Raps," and writer Nelson George represent this crossroads of diverse cultural experiences that define the black geek.
Though I cannot speak for all black geeks, as one myself, I have lived a life of athletic ineptitude and literary appreciation that has made me seem like an oddball. There seems to be a sad stereotype that says black people must all excel in sports, while never cracking open a book. But I'm here to say that some of us love to read and couldn't make a free throw if our lives depended on it. And with that in mind, here's a glimpse at some of what defines black geekiness, and how we make due in a world that seldom caters to us specifically.

What's more, if the remains yield usable DNA, the child could help uncover just who was living on the North American side of the land bridge that likely still connected the Americas to Asia at the time, experts added.

As rescue workers pumped fresh air into the vents and the girl cried, police finally found a locksmith trained to crack the lock. It took him four hours, but the little girl was finally reunited with her family with nothing more serious than a soiled diaper.

"That was one of the better moments I've ever witnessed," said the police chief of the reunion.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian is set to star alongside John Travolta as John Gotti's daughter in a new mobster film, according to US reports.

The 30-year-old has been named as a possible actress in the new movie, which stars Travolta.

Kardashian, who is best known for her role in US reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, has been in talks to play the role of Gotti's daughter-in-law, also called Kim, according to TMZ.com.

Gotti was one of New York's most feared crime bosses and the film will tell the story of three generations of the Gambino crime family, who John Gotti led after the murder of the previous boss, Paul Castellano.

In 1992 he was convicted of several crimes including 13 murders, illegal gambling, loansharking and tax evasion, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Gotti died from throat cancer in 2002 at the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri.

Hollywood star James Franco could also be starring in the movie as Junior Gotti, who is believed to have taken over as the head of the family during his dad's incarceration.

The one opportunity for the top 329 draft prospects to work out for all 32 NFL teams under one roof, the Combine provides a level playing field and the chance for a young man to improve his draft stock. The difference between being a first-round pick and a third-day selection is several million dollars. In Indianapolis this week, any of the 329 kids on hand can go and earn that money.

This year's class of Oscar nominees includes more than a few talents who've been down the red carpet on Hollywood's biggest night before, whether as honored nominees or as ecstatic winners.
