The superstar — who was the the most-awarded female act of all-time, and the one of the world’s best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide — died on February 11, 2012, after she was found unresponsive in suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, submerged in the bathtub.
The cause of death was not immediately known. It was later ruled by the coroner to have been an “accidental drowning”.
She began her career singing gospel, performing with her mother and modeling for fashion magazines, but by the mid-’80s, she was already an international star, having scored a hugely successful debut album and several number-one singles. As a result, she also became the first African-American artist to receive consistent heavy rotation on MTV.
Her second album, Whitney, made her the first female artist in musical history to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart and the first artist to enter the album charts at number one in both the U.S. and the U.K.
Sparkle, Whitney’s fifth and final feature film role — she died three months after filming ending — will be dedicated to her memory. It hits theaters August 17.
