Caroline Kennedy Democratic Convention

Caroline Kennedy Democratic Convention - Caroline Kennedy, the only living heir to former President John F. Kennedy, endorsed President Barack Obama's re-election Thursday at the Democratic National Convention.

"Barack Obama is the kind of leader my father wrote about in 'Profiles In Courage.' He doesn't just do what's easy. He does what's hard. He does what's right," Kennedy said in a convention speech. "My father couldn't run for a second term. It was left to his brothers, our family and the generation they inspired to fight for the America he believed in. Now, it's up to a new generation, our children's generation, to carry America forward."

She defended Obama on women's rights, where the Catholic Church has clashed with the Obama administration over a new rule requiring most religiously-affiliated employers to cover contraception in their health care plans. "As a Catholic woman, I take reproductive health seriously, and today it is under attack," Kennedy said.

As an orator, Ms. Kennedy is nowhere in the league of her father or uncles. Her speech was for the most part met with polite applause.

Kennedy endorsed Obama in a New York Times op-ed in January 2008. She later joined a rally as her uncle endorsed Obama, which rocked the Democratic primary.

Kennedy announced interest in 2008 to fill the seat the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, who would become secretary of state. She withdrew from consideration after a bumbling start marked by an infamous New York Times interview where her speech was marked with "ums" and "you knows" and made a flat joke about the reporters working for a women's magazine.
