Snakes are regarded as pious reptile in Hindu traditions. In different parts of country, snake is worshipped by different customs and traditions.
Date of NaagPanchami:
Festival of Naag Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of moonlit fortnight in the month of shravan according to Hindu calendar. It corresponds to month of July or August according to Roman calendar. Month of Shravan corresponds to Indian monsoon season. During this season, snakes come out of their holes and take shelter in gardens and forests. This festival is celebrated in many parts of India including Punjab, Maharashtra, Kerala and West Bengal.
Importance of Naag Panchami:
Nagas were sacred figure even in Indus Valley civilization, much before the arrival of Aryans. Nagas were not usual snake but the kings with immense power. Shesh Naag which signifies Eternity is the sacred couch of Lord Vishnu. In other religions like Jainism and Buddhism too, snakes are regarded as pious figure. Snake images are drawn on the walls of Hindu Temples.
Lord Shiva loves snakes as he wears them around his neck all the times. Once Lord Krishna had a fight with “Kalia Naag” and drove him away. Kalia Naag was very powerful and made the water of River Yamuna poisonous. Day of Naag Panchami is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Lord Krishna over Kaliya Naag.
Celebration of Naag Panchami:
On this day, devotees worship live sized snakes to seek their blessings and to please them to save family members from snake bite. It is believed that snakes love milk so they are bathed in milk. Haldi-kumkum (turmeric and vermicelli powder which is regarded as pious in Hindu religion) is sprinkled on the snake’s head. After this ritual, they are offered “naivedya” consisting of milk and rice.
