PC to face manslaughter charges over Ian Tomlinson death
PC to face manslaughter charges over Ian Tomlinson death. PC to face manslaughter charge over Tomlinson death. The Metropolitan Police officer caught on film pushing Ian Tomlinson to the ground shortly before his death at the G20 protest will face a manslaughter charge, it has been announced. PC Simon Harwood will face the charge after the Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said that there were now grounds for prosecution following an unlawful killing verdict at Mr Tomlinson’s inquest last month.
It comes after Mr Starmer said last year that conflicting medical evidence meant a manslaughter prosecution was not possible.
But he pledged to review that decision following the inquest and has now concluded that there is “a realistic prospect of successfully prosecuting PC Simon Harwood for the manslaughter of Mr Tomlinson.”
PC Harwood, a Metropolitan Police officer, will appear at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 20 to be formally charged.
Mr Tomlinson, a homeless 47-year-old newspaper seller, collapsed and died on the fringes of the demonstrations in central London on April 1 2009.
