10 Hour Bomb Ordeal in Sydney
10 Hour Bomb Ordeal in Sydney. Sydney police have successfully secured a safe release of a girl in Sydney after a 'live' device was reportedly strapped to her body.Police and officers from the Bomb Disposal and Rescue Unit were called to the house in the Mosman area after a tip off from an 18-year-old woman. "We are treating the device as live until we know otherwise," Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Murdoch told reporters during the incident.

Police gave the media little information, saying they were examining the device and supporting the woman.

Local media reported that the teenager was alone in the house with some claiming a potentially explosive device was around her neck.

The girls shaken parents watched the event unfold from a street with officers.

Officials evacuated surrounding homes and closed off streets to traffic. Medical and fire crews were also on close standby.

Police said they believe it could have been an extortion attempt intended to get money from the wealthy family in one of Australia's richest streets.

The road is home to some of Sydney's wealthiest people, including racing personality Gai Waterhouse, ex-Wallaby Phil Kearns and John Eales.
