Petra Anderson Recovery

Petra Anderson Recovery - A positive story out of Aurora demonstrates how concerned Americans can make a difference in the wake of Friday’s shooting, says faith-based website, followme.org.

(PRWEB) July 25, 2012 One victim’s incredible survival story reveals how concerned citizens can aid recovery efforts after the deadly Aurora massacre, says faith-based website, followme.org.

Petra Anderson, 22, sustained multiple gunshot wounds in Friday’s theater shooting: three in her arm and one that penetrated her nose and entered her brain. The typical prognosis when a bullet enters the brain is, at best, paralysis and speech problems and, at worst, death.

However, due to a rare brain defect, doctors are confident that Petra Anderson is on the road to full recovery, according to an ABC News report.

As doctors began to examine Anderson, neurosurgeons discovered a rare brain defect that likely saved Anderson’s life. Anderson’s pastor, Brad Strait, used his blog to describe the condition as “a tiny channel of fluid running through her skull, like a tiny vein through marble.” Anderson was unaware that she has suffered from this condition since birth, according to ABC News.

Strait, the senior pastor at Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church in Englewood, CO, recorded the events of Anderson’s hospital stay on his blog. He describes how Anderson managed to avoid major brain injury: “Like a marble through a small tube, the defect channels the bullet from Petra’s nose through her brain.”

While doctors were reluctant to attribute the bizarre event to divine intervention, Strait declared: “It’s just like the God I follow to plan the route of a bullet through a brain long before Batman ever rises. Twenty-two years before.”

Regardless of the explanation, however, Anderson is on the path to recovery. According to Andrew Roblyer, a family friend elected to represent the Anderson family, Anderson has moved out of the Intensive Care Unit, has started physical therapy, and is able to talk, walk, and laugh.

Anderson was one of the 58 people wounded in Friday morning’s movie theater shooting in Aurora, CO. A gunman entered the theater during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” and opened fire, killing 12 and injuring 58 others.

When news reports of Anderson’s bizarre circumstance emerged, Anderson’s family established a fund-raising drive to pay for Anderson’s medical expenses. She will likely require more surgery, including facial reconstruction, according to the Indiegogo campaign page.

As the Aurora community recovers from the tragedy, one faith-based website sees signs of hope on the horizon. Pastor Jamie from followme.org said that “Anderson’s story demonstrates how easy it is to make a difference to the people of Aurora. Community organizations, churches, and businesses need to seize the moment.”

Americans seem to be getting the message. As of the publication of this article, the Indiegogo campaign for Petra Anderson had raised over $165,000.
