100-Game Suspension, The first domino in baseball’s Biogenesis scandal has fallen.
Major League Baseball announced a 100-game suspension Friday for Cesar Carrillo, a right-handed pitcher on the Detroit Tigers’ Double A roster.
The suspension of Carrillo stemmed from his name surfacing in Biogenesis documents published by the Miami New Times, major-league sources say.
Baseball is investigating Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic in South Florida that supplied performance-enhancing drugs to players, according to the New Times and other reports.
Carrillo was suspended without pay for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, MLB said in announcing the penalty. No other reason was given for his suspension.
Baseball enjoys greater jurisdiction over minor leaguers like Carrillo than major leaguers who are protected by the players’ union. When MLB announces the suspension of a major leaguer, it details the nature of his offense.
Carrillo, who turns 29 on April 29, attended the University of Miami, where he was Milwaukee Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun’s road roommate for three years, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Part of baseball’s investigation into Biogenesis is focused on former Miami players, three of whom — Carrillo, Braun and San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal — are named in the Biogenesis documents.
Grandal received a 50-game suspension in November for elevated levels of testosterone. He will serve his suspension for the first 50 games of the 2013 season.
