Chistiane Amanpour exits 'This Week' to take on hybrid ABC/CNN International job. George Stephanopoulos adds 'Week' duties while remaining as 'GMA' host

After little more than a year and a half as host of ABC News’ “This Week,” Christiane Amanpour is leaving the show for a new position reporting globally for ABC and CNN International.

She’ll be replaced by George Stephanopolous, whom she replaced in the seat when she joined ABC in August 2010.

“This is an exciting and unique opportunity for me to take my love of storytelling to prime time at ABC News with multiple specials, as well as becoming a roving Global Affairs anchor across all ABC platforms,” Amanpour said in a statement.
She noted that she’ll be broadcasting to millions around the world with a weekday show on CNN International.

“It’s been an incredible experience to have had a ringside seat to democracy in action at ‘This Week,’” she said. “It’s been an incredible honor to anchor such a prestigious program and I thank all of you who have helped me on that journey.”

Amanpour’s version of “This Week” struggled in the Nielsen department, leading to rumors she would leave.

Stephanopolous, who is co-host on “Good Morning America,” now will do both shows, though he may cut out one day a week on the breakfast program.

ABC News president Ben Sherwood said Amanpour had “a remarkable year with world-beating exclusives, and we are thrilled she is going to be traveling the globe for ABC News to bring her unique brand of reporting and storytelling to our viewers.”

Amanpour’s exit, though unrelated, comes just after CBS announced “Face the Nation” would expand to an hour in April.

“Face the Nation,” which is a half-hour shorter than its competitors, is No.1 with the audience of 25- to 54-year-olds for public-affairs shows. NBC’s “Meet the Press” is No. 1 in total viewers for the season to date. CNN network, George Stephanopoulos Amanpour, christiane amanpour this week

“Christiane Amanpour has been synonymous with international reporting and with CNN for many years,” CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton said in a statement. “We could not be happier that through this unique arrangement with ABC News her experience and global perspective are returning to a nightly news broadcast for our international audience.
