Virginia Lacrosse Player And Sentencing

Virginia Lacrosse Player And Sentencing, The sentencing date was set Monday for former University of Virginia star lacrosse player George Huguely, who was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Yeardley Love.

Huguely, 25, will be sentenced Aug. 30, ABC News reported. He was not present at Monday's hearing.

The jury in the case recommended in February that Judge Edward Hogshire sentence Huguely to 26 years in prison -- 25 for the murder conviction and one year for a grand larceny conviction for stealing Love's laptop.

Hogshire can give Huguely the recommended 26 years or a lesser sentence but cannot increase it, according to ABC News.

Huguely was convicted on Feb. 22 on charges of second-degree murder and grand larceny. He was acquitted on charges of burglary, statutory burglary, robbery and first-degree murder.

The trial involving two attractive athletes, a volatile relationship and a prestigious university opened nearly two years after 22-year-old Love's battered body was found by her roommate in their off-campus apartment in the early hours of May 3, 2010.

Both the prosecutors and defense agreed that Huguely visited Love's apartment that night after he spent the day drinking heavily. The prosecution contended that Huguely killed her by repeatedly slamming her head against a wall.

Huguely said he had only gone to Love's apartment to talk to her and that she banged her own head against the wall.
