Search: Justin Bieber's big night at the Billboard Music Awards
Search: Justin Bieber's big night at the Billboard Music Awards. Billboard Music Awards 2011: Night of the Killer B's: Bieber, Beyonce, Britney. The 2011 Billboard Music Awards apparently wanted to keep an alliterative theme going, as Billboard made it a night of big performances and awards for some notable B's: Bieber, Britney, and Beyonce. Although the 2011 Billboard Music Awards offered plenty of other awards and performances, a select few artists had particularly impressive nights.
Let's begin with (Justin) Bieber, also affectionately known as The Biebs or Biebslice, at least in this home. The pint-sized pop star had an epic night, as he picked up six awards: Top New Artist, Top Social Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Pop Album (for My World 2.0 ), Top Streaming Video (for "Baby", featuring. Ludacris) and Top Digital Music Artist. Bieber's haul was the best on the night, although rapper Eminem also picked up six awards. Interesting that two artists that are essentially polar opposites would have equally impressive stashes of hardware at the end of the night. Despite Bieber's big haul, many fans are talking about something else - the fact that Bieber kissed Selena Gomez at the show; the relationship has been tabloid and teeny bopper blog fodder for months.
Britney (Spears) may not have dominated the award table - in fact, she didn't pick up anything - but she did make a big splash. Britney joined Rihanna on stage for the latter star's hit, "S&M", which featured a pillow fight between the two stars and, as has now apparently become standard for award shows, the two ended the performance with a kiss. While it's not clear whether this was a pitch for gay rights or an attempt to increase testosterone levels and ratings, the audience did clearly enjoy it. Britney then popped back out for "Super Bass" with Nicki Minaj, inserting some of her own hit, "Till The World Ends" into Minaj's track.
Although Beyonce took home just one award, it was arguably the biggest award of the night, as the Billboard Millennium Award was bestowed upon Beyonce. The award recognized Beyonce's continuing contributions to popular music (and the bank accounts of many record company executives), from her time with Destiny's Child to the present day. A touching video tribute offered a glimpse of Beyonce's many fans, including Bono, Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga, to name a few.
Beyonce didn't just let everyone else do the talking, though; before the Millennium award was presented, Beyonce unknowingly submitted a testimonial to why she deserved it by performing "Run The World (Girls)", her latest single.
Overall, the 2011 Billboard Music Awards provided plenty of entertainment, even if the show and its awards were heavily skewed toward over-exposed pop artists that pick up hardware at every other award show in existence. Perhaps next year will provide a more diverse array of award recipients.
