The identical quadruplets look so much alike that their mother and father are often unable to pick them apart, prompting the unusual solution.
"My sons are identical, even to me," mother Tan Chaoyun said.
"Even now, their father can't tell which one is which.
"Sometimes, he punishes the second one for something the third one has done."
Before the boys started school, their mother took them to a barber shop to have the crew cuts, leaving the numerals 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the centre of their scalps.
Chinese news website Now News reported the boy's teachers are pleased with the result.
